BIPARTISAN WORK GROUP FORMED TO ADDRESS CHANGES IN STATUTES

On Monday, August 18, 2008, a working group was formed to begin the process of changing current Wisconsin laws re Operating While Intoxicated.

Members of the work group included:

LEGISLATORS:

  • Representative Peggy Krusick, who called the working group together.
  • Representative Joel Kleefisch.
  • Representatives Staskunas, Jorgensen and Kaufert were represented.

 

LAW ENFORCEMENT:

  • Police Chief Rob Dams, Greendale Police Department
  • Deputy Inspector Ed Bailey, Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, had to cancel at the last minute due to an unexpected meeting.

 

WISCONSIN DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION:

  • Paul Nilsen, Attorney
  • Mitch Warren, DMV Legislative Liaison
  • Laura Andreasson, Bureau of Highway Safety

The group met for 1-1/2 hours and agreed to meet again in October 2008 to present research and statistics relative to changes/costs/legislative committee work. It was also agreed to meet in earnest and regularly from November 2008 through January 2009 after the general elections were over, to develop bills, budgets, language and strategies. Both Houses reconvene for session in January 2009. The goal of this working group is to develop legislation to be presented as soon as the Houses reconvene. The working group is bipartisan in nature. All members are committed to the public safety of Wisconsin highways.
