Work Group meets at the Capitol in Madison

On Wednesday, December 17, 2008 the OWI workgroup met to continue vetting ideas and analyzing proposals to change current OWI laws. Representative Peggy Krusick chaired the meeting. Attendees included: Representative Jim Ott; Senator Alberta Darling; Laura Andreaason and Paul Nilsen, DOT; Sheriff of Burnett County, Dean Roland, representing the Badger State Sheriff's Association; Don Salm of the Legislative Council; Peggy Hurley of the Legislative Reference Bureau; Nancy Rottier, State Courts; Lisa Maroney, lobbyist for the UW Health & AWARE coalition; Kari Kinnard, State Executive Director, MADD; Tim Baxter, WI District Attorney's Association; Nina Emerson, UW Resource Center on Impaired Driving; Ed Bailey, Deputy Inspector, Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office; Kelli Thompson, Deputy State Public Defender; and Judy and Paul Jenkins, parents of Jennifer Bukosky.

The workgroup has been ongoing. Today's agenda centered on criminalizing the first OWI offense and allowing law enforcement to use sobriety checkpoints to deter impaired driving.

The next scheduled meeting is Monday, January 12th, at 1:00 p.m., at the Capitol in Madison.
