Oconomowoc High School administrator Jennifer Bukosky, her 10-year-old daughter, Courtney Bella, and her unborn daughter, whom she planned to name Sophia, were killed in April when an SUV slammed into their stopped car.
The driver of the SUV, former surgeon Mark Benson, had pleaded guilty to his third drunken-driving offense just two days before and was sentenced to 75 days in jail with work release. The judge had allowed Benson two weeks of freedom before reporting to jail. He was not supposed to drive.
According to the criminal complaint, Benson not only drove, but he did so under the influence of sleeping pills, a painkiller and an anti-anxiety drug. Wisconsin's laws against operating while intoxicated also forbid driving under the influence of drugs.
Bukosky's supporters have launched a web site that urges people to get involved by signing petitions and contacting their legislators to toughen drunken driving laws in Wisconsin. The site also features updates on the case.
