Benson Plea Deal Expected

WAUKESHA - Mark Benson is expected to enter a guilty plea next week under a plea agreement, according to sources who spoke on a condition of anonymity. It would end a high profile criminal case that has grabbed headlines for more than one year.

Benson is the former orthopedic surgeon who is charged with causing an accident that killed three people. Prosecutors say Benson was high on prescription drugs at the time of the crash.

It happened in Oconomowoc in April of 2008. Oconomowoc High School assistant principal Jennifer Bukosky died in the crash along with her unborn baby and her daughter Courtney Bella.

At a motion hearing this coming Tuesday, sources say Benson will agree to plead guilty. Benson's case would then go straight to sentencing.

Without an agreement, Benson is scheduled to go on trial for homicide and other charges in mid-July.

Benson had three drunken driving cases on his record prior to the April 2008 crash. Prosecutors say his driver's license was revoked and that he should not have been driving in the first place.

Benson bailed out of jail earlier this year. However, prosecutors say he violated one of his bail conditions by purchasing steroids from Florida. Under the bail terms, Benson was ordered to only use one pharmacy to purchase any necessary medication.

The Waukesha County District Attorney's office would not comment about any possible plea deal. Multiple messages to Benson's attorney's office were not returned.
